Cape Verde
Day 82 - 23 September 2005
the little things

don’t you miss the days of getting excited over the little things? like the beauty of nature? and refrigeration? just bein outside provides so much opportunity around here to just gaze. at the ocean...at the mountains...at the islands in the distance..at the largest deep water harbor in the Atlantic..at the chocolate brown sand...at the beautiful people...at the new and strange lifestyle and mannerisms of those around me...it’s amazing to just be here. i never forget how incredible of an opportunity this is and how lucky i am. i need to start takin pictures to attempt to convey to y’all what it feels like to be here. such a beautiful place with such a different culture that i just can’t help but feel overwhelmed...in a good way. i feel like the kid with the video camera in American Beauty, ‘cept it’s like Cape Verdian Beauty. everything is...just...so...beautiful... sometimes i just can’t take it...hahaha...
and yes, refrigeration. my first week here i went grocery shopping every day. since we got our new larger fridge, my roomie & i went on a spree, buyin 4 kg of carrots & 6 kg of potatoes and basically got a week’s worth of groceries. y’all should’ve seen how excited he was. he’s lived here for a year with a tiny cube fridge and never had space for more than butter, one piece of tupperware with leftovers and a few beers and waters. he’s been talkin about the weekly shoppin for 3 days now. i’m sure i’ll be just like that in a few months...
not takin things for granted is such a gift. period. i think i’m gonna go ponder on that now...
