Day 55 - 27 August 2005 Tarrafal so much for not comin home late anymore...two nights in a row after late nights watchin movies or kickin it at the kiosk with folks. if I didn’t live in the fora, I’m sure it wouldn’t be a problem. it ain’t easy chillin with the downtown folk...hahaha...i keep askin my mom & dad if it’s ok that I return so late and they always say they don’t have a problem with it. next time I’ll just ask for a house key so I don’t hafta wake them. oh well, only one more weekend here anyhoo... so on our last weekend here, we get treated out to a beach party after a political prisoner concentration camp tour. I didn’t even know there was one...until now. the beach is BEEEAUTIFUL. wow I miss beaches ("CA kid" someone calls me...as if they even know). there’s a li’l diving platform on one side and I jump off a few times, flippin once for my peepos. I meet this kid who’s prolly 16 or so, who wants to hit on all my American friends and instead I get him talking about American culture like eminem, the Lakers, other sports, and how many girlfriends he has, all in kriolu. he’s a crazy kid who talks like he’s tryin to impress an American with his knowledge and mudjerentu skills (he got game apparently). then it was lunchtime and the food was grrrrrreat! bbq’d chicken & fish & veggies and fries and rice and more fries & chicken & fanta fanta fanta! do you wanna? so the testosterone from last year sparks this debate with this year’s and they arrange this football game (which I don’t wanna play in cuz my gut is about to bust open), but I get coerced into the beach battle. 5 on 5 we struggle with the hottest sand known to man and take on the big bullies. tackle tackle tackle...i can’t seem to move fast enough in the sand to get my hands on anybody to tackle, so instead I run the wide receiver patterns and make two touchdowns with bobble catches...a feat that twice impresses my teammates. the acrobatics of pushin the ball down the field thru the air like volleyball before actually catchin it seems to be my specialty...somehow. I just don’t know where that energy came from. I pay for it dearly afterwards though. my tummy rumbles, my feet never stop burnin and I just don’t look like a happy camper as we depart for home. the only 2 things that could get my mind off my body pains- 13 in the hiace ride and coconut groves flanked by banana fields...banana pancakes anybody? we take the scenic road home, passin 3 banana fields and a few coconut tree groves and with the constant (losing) streak of 13 goin on, my spirits are raised. yay for cards and fruit! <--- site announcement                the mantra ---> |
