Cape Verde
Day 37 - 9 August 2005
ka ten luz

who thinks electricity is overrated? me too! I love walkin home in complete darkness! I love showerin in complete darkness! I love eatin by candlelight and doin my homework by flashlight! this is what I came for...the challenge. the excitement of "Africa" has been downplayed so much here because it’s CV. it’s not really Africa- it’s so much more developed with homes constructed of cinder blocks, "running" cold water, electricity 75% of the time, too much food, lots of trash, lack of wild animals, public transportation, roads, technology. I’m actually excited that we haven’t had luz (electricity) for two days now, cuz it reminds me I’m not at home. I’m not in a place where I can go home after school and watch TV or jump on the internet. I’m in a developing country durn it, and even though it might be a li’l more developed than what I was expectin, I’m still here to help and things like unreliable electricity remind me of that, just in case I had forgotten it for a sec. ka ten luz...like magic to my ears...and darkness to my eyes...
