Cape Verde
Day 28 - 31 July 2005
Praia and Praia Baixo

oh, how boring this city is gettin. bein that the town we’re bein trained in has no internet access, and very little resources for certain "luxuries" Americans might call necessities, we must travel an hour over roads that are constantly under construction (they’re changin the main road from cobblestone to pavement), to do the same thing over and over...keep in touch. I’m not complainin, it’s just that it’s getting so routine. and there’s nothin new to do or see. I do appreciate the "fast" DSL which I prolly won’t have access to when I get to site in a month and and certain cafes we frequent for shwarmas (spelling anybody?) and hamburgas completas and pizza and tiramisu and Boca Doce (bakery), and the huge supermarket that has almost everythin you need and not so much of what us novo voluntarios Americanos want. so there really is a bunch of good things there too, and I’m not complainin, I think I’m just gettin ready to get to site, to a place where I can settle in for 2 years and not hafta travel an hour in some direction or another to do something (makes me think of everythin in soCAL is an hour away from everythin else..ugggh). Only 5 more weeks...then maybe I can actually respond to all y’all emailin me in some timely manner. I really hope y’all aren’t getting P-O’d with me and my super impersonal super infrequent mass emails. believe me, this will change, hopefully soon. now I see how my other friends out here respond so infrequently. as for Praia Baixo, the beach in S.D., I had a great time. went with a couple of buddies, and ran into even more fellow trainees and host families. the sand is actually a dark chocolate brown here and the water was a beautiful sea green. I love the beach...instead of actually swimmin or wadin out with the kids, I chilled with the adults and ate pizza (with tuna) and cookies and walked to the far side to catch some chill time with "the boys"...the CVean host dad and his buddies who were feastin and poundin groginhus at the café over there. not a bad time overall. too bad my host mom got violently ill that mornin and couldn’t come out as well. it woulda been a grand ol’ time with the whole fam...
