Day 17 - 20 July 2005 Cidade Velha - Old City So we experienced a slice of C.V. history today and visited the fort @ Cidade Velha, the first city on the islands. It was the city where slaves were trained on their way out to Europe and the states and dates way back to 1462. The town is called São Francisco-sound familiar? We walked through the town to the church, monastery, and beach after lookin through the fort. I really miss the beach-just knowin that it’s around and bein able to go whenever. hope my site has beaches nearby. (sal anybody?) so apparently Sir Francis Drake attacked the fort twice during it’s long history. crazy noh? inside the fort there were these holes in the ground formerly used as single prison cells and one of my friends really needed to answer the call of the wild so he xixi’d in one of the cells. good times. so on the walk to the monastery, Nick-i from last year, who stayed with my host family last year asked me if I saw the "baril di grogu" in my host bro’s room. "WHAA??" was my official immediate response. so apparently my fam sells grogue (CVean sugar cane rum) out of the house to neighbors ’n friends...how crazy is that? it’s just funny to see the barrel sittin there in his room. Today was also a buddy’s bday which he tried to keep under wraps, but of course the fofoka (gossip) spreads like wildfire around here, but amongst CVeans and us, so we took him on a bar crawl and hit up two bars (he eventually made it to a third) and he had a good and partially memorable aniversariu. I hung out with a few friends at the concrete soccer field for a bit just choppin it up and now a friend of mine just can’t look at me the same she says. funny how first impressions can change so quickly. guess I’m not just the reserved kid she thought I was...eh. glad to be getting to know folks better the old fashioned way- just kickin it... <--- S.
